Medicare & Military / VA Benefits

If you’ve served our country, you may have access to VA (Veterans Affairs) benefits or TRICARE for Life (TFL). The good news? You can keep those benefits and still enroll in Medicare. I’m Jake McGeoy, your local Medicare agent, and I’ll help you coordinate both so you get the best of each system.

How VA Benefits Work with Medicare

  • VA Benefits: You can get care at VA hospitals and clinics, often at low or no cost.

  • Medicare: Covers care at non-VA doctors and hospitals.

With both, you have the flexibility to get treatment at VA facilities and civilian providers.

How TRICARE for Life Works with Medicare

  • You must enroll in Medicare Part A & Part B when eligible.

  • Once enrolled, Medicare pays first, then TRICARE for Life picks up most of the remaining costs.

  • This gives you robust coverage with little to no out-of-pocket expenses for covered services.

Prescription Drug Coverage for Veterans

  • VA offers its own prescription drug coverage, often at lower costs than Medicare Part D.

  • If you rely solely on VA pharmacies, you may not need a Medicare drug plan.

  • But if you want access to retail or mail-order pharmacies outside the VA, a Part D plan can be helpful.

Why Combine Medicare with VA or TRICARE?

  • More flexibility: Medicare gives you access to doctors and hospitals outside the VA system.

  • Lower risk: If a VA facility is far away or you need emergency care elsewhere, Medicare ensures you’re covered.

  • Peace of mind: TRICARE for Life and Medicare together mean most of your medical expenses are fully covered.
