Medicare Part A – Hospital Insurance

When it comes to your health, having a safety net for hospital stays is essential. Medicare Part A is that safety net — helping cover major medical services like hospital care, skilled nursing, hospice, and certain home health care.

As your local Medicare agent here in Maryland, I’m here to make Part A simple so you can feel confident about your coverage and focus on what matters most — your health.

What Does Medicare Part A Cover?

Medicare Part A helps pay for:

  • Inpatient hospital stays – This includes your room, meals, nursing care, and other hospital services.
  • Skilled nursing facility care – For recovery after a qualifying hospital stay (but not long-term or custodial care).
  • Hospice care – Comfort-focused care for those with a terminal illness, along with support for your family.
  • Limited home health services – Skilled care at home when medically necessary.
Tip from Jake: Many people think Part A covers all nursing home costs — but it doesn’t. It only covers skilled nursing after a hospital stay, and only for a limited number of days.

Who Is Eligible for Part A?

You’re eligible if:

  • You’re 65 or older and a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  • You’re under 65 and have certain disabilities.
  • You have End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) and meet Medicare’s requirements.
Most people are automatically enrolled in Part A when they turn 65 if they’re already receiving Social Security or Railroad Retirement benefits.
