Medicare vs. Medicare Advantage – Which is Right for You?

When you first enroll in Medicare, you have an important decision to make:
Stick with Original Medicare (Parts A & B) or choose a Medicare Advantage Plan (Part C).

Both have strengths. Both have trade-offs. The right choice depends on your health needs, budget, and personal preferences.
I’m Jake McGeoy, your local Medicare agent, and I’ll help you see the difference — without the confusing jargon.

Original Medicare (Parts A & B)

  • What It Covers: Hospital care (Part A) + medical services (Part B)

  • Flexibility: See any doctor or hospital in the U.S. that accepts Medicare

  • Extra Coverage: Doesn’t include dental, vision, or hearing — you’ll need separate plans for those

  • Prescription Drugs: Requires a stand-alone Part D plan for medications

  • Costs: You pay deductibles, coinsurance, and premiums; Medigap can help cover gaps

Medicare Advantage (Part C)

  • What It Covers: All Part A & Part B services, usually plus extras like dental, vision, hearing, and wellness benefits

  • Network: Often limited to local doctors and hospitals in the plan’s network (HMO or PPO)

  • Prescription Drugs: Most include drug coverage in the same plan

  • Costs: May have lower monthly premiums, but you’ll have copays and an annual out-of-pocket limit

  • Extras: Many offer gym memberships, telehealth, and other perks

Jake’s Tip: If you travel often or want the widest provider choice, Original Medicare + Medigap might fit best. If you want everything bundled in one plan (and don’t mind using a network), Medicare Advantage could be the way to go.
